St Faith St Martin Church of England Junior School

Inspired by local, national and international practice, we aim to deliver a high-quality mathematics education that engages, inspires and challenges our pupils, providing them with a firm foundation of knowledge. We aim to equip our pupils with mathematical fluency as well as the ability to reason and problem solve so that they will go on to become mathematicians of the future.

Excellence
Ensure excellence in teaching and learning within a high quality learning environment, through leadership and within all aspects of school life. Promote a love of mathematical problem solving and celebrate pupils’ achievements in mathematics.

Encouragement
Create a positive atmosphere where everyone feels happy, safe and valued; where consistent encouragement, praise and effective feedback lead to success and development of mathematical talent and confidence.

Exploration
Allow children to explore mathematical concepts through stimulating learning environments and the use of practical resources where they encounter challenging and creative learning experiences.  Provide pupils with the opportunity to discover links and achieve fluency between different mathematical concepts.

Spirituality in Maths

Spirituality plays an important role in mathematics. Mathematics is about more than just numbers and calculations. It is a way of understanding the world and our place in it. Pupils are taught to approach mathematics with a spiritual mindset, they are encouraged to see patterns, connections, and meaning in the world around them. This can help them to feel more connected to the world and to develop a sense of purpose and meaning in their lives.

For example, pupils can be encouraged to see mathematics as a tool for exploring the structure and order of things - even things as big as the universe! Pupils are taught to appreciate the beauty and elegance of mathematical concepts such as symmetry, proportion, and balance. They are also encouraged to see the interconnectedness of different mathematical concepts and to use this understanding to explore the patterns and relationships in the world around them.

By incorporating spirituality into mathematics at SFSM it helps students develop a sense of wonder, purpose, and connection to the world around them.
