St Faith St Martin Church of England Junior School

We aim to deliver a high-quality language education that engages, inspires and challenges our pupils, providing them with the knowledge and skills to engage and develop an understanding of the French language as well as French culture.  At SFSM, we want all of our children to be able to make substantial progress in French which will lay the foundations for further language learning.  Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum will cover many topics. Through these topics, children will be able to understand and respond to spoken and written language, speaking with confidence, fluency, and spontaneity.  The French topics will help children become less insular and gain an understanding of another culture.

Excellence
At SFSM, we will ensure excellence in teaching and learning within a high-quality learning environment, through leadership and within all aspects of school life. We celebrate our pupils’ ability to ask and answer questions and through exciting curriculum opportunities which offer our pupils the chance to hear native speakers, communicate for practical purposes and access quality literature in French.
Encouragement
We create a positive atmosphere where everyone feels happy, safe and valued; where consistent encouragement, praise and effective feedback lead to success and development in the pupils’ understanding of the French language and culture.
Exploration
We allow children to explore through stimulating learning environments and the use of technology. They encounter challenging and creative learning experiences. They explore patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes, engage in conversations; developing accurate pronunciation and intonation. Our pupils will begin to develop an understanding and knowledge that impacts on their own development in the subject.

Spirituality in French
Spirituality features in French as it allows children to connect with the cultural and linguistic significance of the French language. Through the learning of French, children may encounter spiritual concepts, beliefs, and values intrinsic to French culture, such as the sacredness of Catholicism, and the importance of mindfulness, gratitude, and emotional intelligence.

French language and literature provide an opportunity for children to connect with spiritual themes such as love, loss, identity, and self-expression. Through reading and writing literary works, children can engage in critical analysis and explore philosophical and spiritual values.

French food, music and other cultural expressions can promote a sense of belonging and offer a direct experience of spirituality in a way that transcends language barriers. Through the French language teaching at SFSM, pupils can connect with themselves, others, and the world in different, meaningful and spiritual ways, leading to greater self-awareness and personal growth.
